Workshop Description:

Students often become afraid to take a chance and experiment with their mark making for fear of ruining their painting. In this workshop, students will let go of the fear! Learn to infuse energy into your paintings with the use of a brayer under painting, contour drawing techniques and various tools to manipulate pastel, and putting color theory to work! These techniques can be applied to any subject matter.

This fast-paced workshop is structured as a series of short demonstrations. After each demonstration students will practice the technique at their easel. These exercises will be timed and will be a progression from contour line drawing with pastel/charcoal, drawing with a brayer and adding pastel on the surface and then manipulating the pastel with various “tools”.

When applying color students will choose different color schemes to quickly add color to the paintings. Techniques for working beyond local color will be touched on. High Key, Low Key, Analogous and Complimentary colors will be discussed.

Supplies:

Regular set up for Pastels - including charcoal ....

AND ... small found objects, fruit, vegetables or flowers to use as reference to paint from. Photographs are okay if the you really shy away from working from life.

Brayers and paint will be provided.  Brayers will be available for purchase $14.00.

Lunch:

Please bring your own bag lunch. Coffee, water and snacks provided (We have found that this works better than ordering out because there are so many different dietary requirements)

Bio:

Anne is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and known for her stunning use of color, contrast and movement within her paintings.  Her training in fashion design is apparent in her work with regards to color and design.

"To be able to pick up a pastel and draw or paint at the same time lends itself perfectly to how I work. I love the variety of texture and mark-making, whether I take advantage of the pastel to make direct marks, or manipulate the use of colors through tools - razors, various paintbrushes, bamboo skewers - to rub, scratch, or brush the pigment on the surface. Pastel allows me to be impulsive and react immediately to what's developing in each painting." Anne Strutz.
